Jeep ducking explained: where it started, the etiquette, and the best ducks to leave

You walk back to your car and there it is: a rubber duck on your door handle, sometimes with a note. If you drive a Jeep, you have just been ducked.

Where Jeep ducking started

The tradition is usually traced back to Allison Parliament, a Canadian living in Alabama. In 2020, after an unpleasant moment in a car park, she left a rubber duck on a stranger's Jeep with a note that said "nice Jeep". The owner suggested she post about it, the post took off, and within a couple of years Jeep ducking groups on Facebook had hundreds of thousands of members.

The idea has stayed the same: a small, random act of kindness between strangers who happen to share something.

The etiquette

  • Duck someone else, never yourself. The fun is in the surprise.
  • Leave it where it will be seen: the door handle, the mirror, the bonnet or the spare wheel. Never block the windscreen.
  • Add a note if you like: "You've been ducked" and #DuckDuckJeep.
  • Post your duck. Ducked drivers share a photo, and many line their dashboard with every duck they have received.
  • Pass it on. Keep a few ducks in the glovebox so you are ready when you spot a Jeep.

Not every Jeep owner is a fan. If someone clearly does not want ducks, leave them be.

The best ducks to leave on a Jeep

A plain yellow duck does the job. A duck with a story gets photographed.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean if someone puts a duck on my Jeep?

You have been "ducked": a friendly gesture from another Jeep fan. Keep it, put it on your dashboard, or pass it on to another Jeep.

Who started Jeep ducking?

It is credited to Allison Parliament, who left a duck on a stranger's Jeep with the note "nice Jeep" in 2020. Her post went viral.

Can I duck my own Jeep?

That goes against the spirit of it. The point is to surprise someone else.

Where do I put the duck?

On the door handle, mirror, bonnet or spare wheel, somewhere visible that does not block the driver's view.
